For those of you still looking at stained old carpet…or ugly unfinished boards…get motivated ! It takes a weekend to change your depressing old floor to fresh and gorgeous white boards, so it’s crazy to go through another summer hating the space. You won’t know the room and you’ll love yourself for making such a change.
Come winter…throw a groovy rug on the floor and add some warm colours to your scheme and you’re sorted.
Lots of images to inspire and links below for the DIY aspect of it …

So, I’ve come up with a short video to show you how…the easy way!!!
From relatively simple groupings, like the one above…

Stairs don’t have to be purely functional. If anything…when faced with an unavoidable architectural element like this, your best bet is to draw more attention to it. So go for it! Pimp up your stairs and get creative. Loving the red ones above!

If your staircase leads up to the kids area, there are loads of cute ways to decorate.

With weather like this it’s crazy not to have your next dinner party in the back yard.
Image from www.google.com
Not a problem if you don’t have an outdoor table…just re-locate your dining table and chairs to the nicest (and flat-est) park of your front or back yard for the evening.

With ipod docks, lanterns and a couple of oversized ice buckets your garden can be transformed.
Image from www.prettystuff.tumblr.com
And it’s just as gorgeous, if not more so, to do it for a lunch (or brunch, or afternoon tea…).
If you can’t entertain in the back yard because the weeds are overgrown, or you haven’t cleared that pile of old rubbish in the corner…then weed it or clear it. It’s summertime, there’s a long weekend coming…get on it. Here are some great images to motivate you…

And if you don’t have a dining table…use cushions, rugs and a coffee table. But whatever you use…spend a minute…style it up. You’ll love it and so will your guests.

This time of year there are still flowers in our gardens…but they don’t last long in the heat. One way of maximising the life of your flowers, either home grown or store bought, is to cut the stems a lot shorter. Doing this of course means standard vases are too tall for the blooms…which is a great opportunity to be creative.
Image from www.flickr.com
Opportunity shops have heaps of sweet little bud vases, old jars, small jugs… loads of options that will set you back less than a fiver. Using multiple small vases means you can have flowers in more areas. So if your garden is still coming up with some splashes of colour…make the most of them and spread them around! A throne is only a bench covered with velvet.
Napoleon Bonaparte
Thing is, they don’t just look amazing…they feel amazing. Sumptuous…and rich! Velvet couches are the bomb.
Image from www.conspicuousstyle.com
I love the chesterfield style in velvet. The button back look is so beautiful, but not necessarily comfortable. Generally done in leather you feel the need to sit up and behave yourself on a chesterfield…not what I’m looking for in a couch! But upholstered in velvet, a chesterfield is welcoming and gorgeous.

And then there’s colour… A velvet couch is great, a green couch is great. But a green velvet couch…

Love a good door. The cooler the door, the more I want to see what’s behind it. We paint our walls great colours, hang paintings, photos and mirrors on them … and tend to ignore doors. Yet they have the capacity to be the stand out visual in a room or at front of house… for the cost of a two litre can of paint.
It’s a good project to attack over the holidays. And although most of my images are of front doors…it doesn’t have to be. Internal doors can look amazing if given the opportunity.

This is the time of year when a lack of organization will bite you on the ass. Getting a spare room habitable for guests, even just locating the chrissy decorations can be a cinch or a nightmare… depending on whether you did anything about it last year.
Cabinetry is costly and permanent, but baskets are an inexpensive storage solution that can adapt to your changing circumstances. And they work in every room in the house…

Keep in mind that stackable ones are space savers for when they’re not in use.

Low ones are great for orgainizing little items. Ikea have half size as well as the original size woven baskets that fit two to a cube in their expedit bookcases.

You can even get stair baskets…an extraordinarily good idea for Mum’s in two storey houses.

And these wire ones are gorgeous.
Organising with baskets is not expensive and it’s not hard. While you’re finishing off present shopping grab a cool selection and set yourself up for a smooth and organised new year.
