Mood boards are collections of things that inspire you…and as such crucial!!! If an image, colour, fabric, shape or texture grabs the attention of the right hand side of your brain… don’t put it in a drawer! Nurture it… add to it. Put in a drawer and your right side will never think of it again, and the left side will ignore it or file it further away. If you don’t like a loose relaxed look…. give it some order, place it inside a frame or on a straight line. You’ll find it automatically colour co-ordinates itself anyway. However you do it… do it. For without inspiration, ideas and dreams, our homes and ourselves stagnate and wither.

So…if you don’t have fabulous windows, and you want to be inspired when you sit at your desk… the answer, as always, is ART!

It’s diversity that makes this look work. Different shapes, different mediums, different colours. Unless you’re a minimalist, (and let’s face it.. if you’re reading my blog, you’re not), you need multiple focal points. Activity ( by that I mean art in all it’s shapes and forms) at eye level, means activity (and by that I mean your everyday bits and pieces -read mess ) on your desk and other surface areas doesn’t strike a visually discordant note. To put it simply.. if you’re a messy worker… make sure you have a really diverse galleria above the desk to balance it all out! ps. loving the extended light cord swung across the room.

If you’re not messy something like this can look amazing. What I love about this is the inherent symmetry of the “squares within a square”, beautifully contrasting with an offset image.

I love vintage signs in an office….such a sense of history and a cool re-purposing.

By incorporating the wood storage (love it) and using a smattering / scattering of cool art the result is confidently quirky … a very relaxed feel without any sense of clutter.

Clever styling. Note how the desk gathering on the left, and draped pom poms (who doesn’t love a pom pom?) balances the offset collage on the wall.

Another cool re-purposing. An old bed spring base works brilliantly within its own frame to hold any number of focal pieces.

I love this in so many ways… The beautiful symmetry of the pendants with the art, the pop of orange and yellow in an otherwise totally monochromatic setting, the lightness of the wire chair, the trestle table desk….

And I love this for just as many opposing reasons! Such a generous splash of loved images… the randomness of this look belies a beautifully considered layout.

Fabulous! I am in love with that fox print and the winged sheep! The beads on the round hook mix the overall look beautifully… the visible brown tape just works, and every office should have a feather quill.

Making your view an extension of your practical needs is always a cool and clever approach.

This is so beautiful! I may never be able to live with such a controlled look… but that doesn’t mean I don’t love it! That artwork is amazing.

Great vintage sign.

So…go big go small… go multiples with symmetry or multiples with asymmetry. Find a piece that you love, it could be a drawing, a saying, a print or a book cover. Start with that and group around it to make a view for yourself of things you love. Images that lift your spirit or quotes that inspire you. Whatever you do… don’t leave the wall blank. That’s catching that is…. your mind will be next…

Formal dining rooms are a thing of the past…but we still need some designated area for eating. The problem is, now that dining areas are integrated into the kitchen/living areas, often not quite enough space is allocated. If, like half Australia’s population, you’ve got a small dining area, hopefully this post will give you some good ideas to turn that pokey space into a great space to eat and entertain.

Built-in bench seats like this are very effective for maximising floor space. Fantastic solution in a galley style kitchen .

A built in bench seat doesn’t have to stay in the kitchen…they work brilliantly in lounge/dining areas too. I love the mix of bench and chairs…so cool and informal.
Image from www.desiretoinspire.net
And nor do they actually have to be benches… Loving these old diner booths and table.
Image from www.homesandgardens.com
And while we’re exploring alternative seating options… This is clever. Two x two seater couches…now that’s a grown up dinner party. Or a comfy one at least.
Image from www.geheause.com
Of course, bench seats that aren’t built in are also excellent for small spaces. Not only have you lessened the number of chair legs (my pet hate), you can still have them hard up against the wall, and they can slide underneath your table and be entirely out of the way when not needed.
Image from www.geheause.com
Combos of seating can look fab, just don’t have too much action going on with them at eye height.

Stools and benches add loads of interest, but take no space at eye level.

Rugs play an important role in small areas. They help delineate the area, and unify the pieces within it. Particularly fond of a hide under a dining table…
Image from www.paloma.blogspot.com
This may look great, but take my word for it … shag should be nowhere near your dining room. That rug is on its way to becoming a petrie dish.

And finally, colour – when used well – does amazing things for small spaces.
Hope you got some inspiration!

Anyone else watching The Block? I haven’t loved any of the rooms at all…but I have always loved an inside swing…and the couple who did the boys room put in a lot of fun kid’s stuff including a swing. The key to this working is, of course, space. You want to make sure you have a clear trajectory. Because if you give a child a swing…you can be sure they’ll use it to the fullest!
An indoor swing is about the most effective “informaliser” you can get. It adds a sense of relaxed fun to any space, particularly an indoor one where its presence is unexpected.
How gorgeous is this all white room? So pretty with the addition of the swing, and then we have the room below…
Where the swing and the space are just plain cool.
Here, the swing really complements the space by drawing more attention to the fab ceiling height. Clever and cool.
A few more images to inspire…
And I know it’s a little cheesy, and borderline Anne Geddes, but I love love love trailing vine up a swing…

A Suzani is an embroidered tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries.
Traditionally they were embroidered by Central Asian brides to present to their husbands on their wedding day.
So, basically a dowry…but a whole lot more beautiful than stinking camels with bad attitudes. I wonder what he got her…
Suzani is a Persian word for needle, and the art of making textiles like this is called Suzankari as silk or cotton thread is hand embroidered onto a cotton base in a variety of stitch styles.
Often you’ll find they’re made in two or more pieces and then sewn together.
I love them! I love how they bring a good punch of colours, textures and patterns into a room with just one piece.. You see a lot of sun and moon motifs , tulips, carnations and irises, leaves and vines, fruits…gorgeous stuff!
Beware over usage though! With something as strong as a Suzani there is such a thing as too much. But used well…. Stunning!
Suzanis really lend themselves to upholstery too…

How fantastic does this one look as a bedhead…. stunning…
Check out http://www.uzbek-craft.com/ for online suzanis…but also keep an eye out on Ebay.

Lumiere Art & Co
http://lumiereartandco.blogspot.com.au/
Today we’re focusing on a beautiful site called Lumiere Art & Co.
Emma Cleine, owner and designer, began her business with vintage paper flags. Now her range includes wooden objects, limited edition prints, artworks and textiles like these gorgeous Madala cushions. Printed on 100% Russian linen, each cushion is double sided, with a relief print on both sides.
The gorgeous design is a direct print of a piece of handmade vintage lace. Emma rolls the linen and paint covered lace through a printing press…clever!
Love these cubes…perfect as book ends.
And these large ones are absolutely fab! Made to order with vintage book pages and sealed with environmentally safe polymer acrylic Small 30 x 30cm Large 40 x 40cm. So great as an occasional table, for storage, or just as a decorative piece.

With the exception of yesterday we have had so many lovely days in a row that it’s been wonderful spending time outdoors. Creating your own outdoor room is a fantastic thing to do to make the most of our beautiful weather.
The key elements to an outdoor room are comfy chairs, a sheltered space, and pretty accessories. If the outdoor chairs you have are uncomfortable…then get rid of them! If you have something in an area that does’t work…then the area won’t work, and uncomfortable chairs are just stupid. (The same rule applies to all the insanely uncomfortable sofas out there in holiday homes. I have no idea why everyone puts their most uncomfortable furniture in the place they most want to relax…) Also…there’s loads of waterproof options out there nowadays. So mattresses, cushions, even rugs can be left out if there’s some degree of shelter.
Seating that has storage in it is a terrific option for an outdoor area…then the cushions etc can be stowed away during the wet months. It doesn’t have to be huge…but an outdoor room is a crucial part of the house. We only have about 3-4 months of the year where it’s comfortable to be outside…so we need to make the most of it with really appealing areas that we can’t wait to chill out in. Some images from the sweet to the sublime to inspire…
I would like to see some great Moroccan painted tiles here…
Good lighting can make all the difference to you using your area after sundown. If you have one harsh spotlight….turn it off or direct its focus up the nearest tree! For romance think fairy lights and lanterns…for fun check out multicoloured string lights like these..
What a beautiful bench…
I’m not entirely sure this is even an outside room…but it’s fun
Now that looks comfy…
And that…
I would love to have an outdoor fireplace and mantle!!!
Again…not sure if this is an outdoor rug….but man it’s gorgeous!!! I am on the hunt for it or similar…will keep you posted.

The bonus is, they can turn an awkward or dull niche, into the coolest part of the house!
Your house should always tell your story and these, quite literally, do exactly that.
