Home Office – practical choices matter

painted wooden office chair

Image from Ideas for cottage on the water

If you want to love your office, then you have to make good decisions.  Pick furniture that suits your needs and your taste.  But remember form follows function… so the practical needs must be met first!  How gorgeous is this vintage swivel chair??

Don’t be scared of large pieces in small spaces… but if you do have an oversized piece and you’re not after the overflow boho look, then minimise your other elements.

I love this desk.  Visually light, cute practical storage and a fun splash of colour.

Ladder love… but holding a rug in a study is a little unnecessary (?), I hang my fabrics and trim on mine… They’re also great for business periodicals.

If lots of storage is required at hand.. then choose something you are happy to have dominate the room, like this fab vintage cupboard.

Muuto Lamp.

Easily my favourite style of desk.  The trestle table doesn’t sit heavily in the room.  Many desks look like big blobs drawing all the attention and sucking all the visual space out of the room.  If you have the traditional heavy covered desk… you want to be a good stylist and have a good space to play with.

Love this vintage black one!  The only issue with a trestle is no drawers or inbuilt storage… but that can be behind you, to the side… even visible underneath…

Making or re- purposing your own desk or table means you’ll love yourself as much as your office.

A custom built desk can ensure you make the very most of your space.

Or… it can just be beautiful and express you!

Comfortable home office

A quirky addition, like this hammock can give the humble office area a real lift…  and perfect for power naps!

When I finally convince E to start that business with me, our home office will look like this.

If you have more than one person using the space… symmetry can be  a great friend.  Note the lamps, pendants, desks and shelving.

Or have two quite different styles complementing each other…. I love this look.

If you’re lucky enough to be a designer or architect… you’re halfway there already with the beautiful lines of a drawing desk.

Shhhhhh!

Image from www.apartmenttherapy.com

Books!  Have I mentioned how great books look?  If you have boxes of them taking up space and a room that lacks character…then bring the two together!

A great bookcase can make a room… see the amazing space above.  That would have to be one of the coolest dining rooms I’ve seen.  Love the ladder!

Image from www.design-elements-blog.com

Having a big bookcase doesn’t mean the look has to be heavy and dark.  If your shelving is painted the same colour as the walls they will effectively disappear and  the visual impact is made by the books…not the shelves. Then just ensure that your display (books or whatever) have some space around them to keep the look clean and uncluttered.
But if you do want that den look… then go dark wood and cram the books in!!  Multiple books in a room immediately loosens your look and makes it easier to introduce new colours and patterns…and it gives you more storage!
Some great images to inspire… enjoy!

Use your roof!

Image from www.pinterest.com

If you’re lucky enough to have room in your roof…you should use it!  Good  windows and blinds are key to making a small attic space work…and these ones above are fantastic for air circulation.  Also loving the touch of wallpaper above the bed!

Image from www.google.com

Of course your usable space is limited with the angles of the roof…but it’s the angles that make the rooms look so gorgeous!

Image from www.conspicuousstyle.com

So many uses for an attic space…. Love the idea of a dressing room up there…might have to have the high heels downstairs though.

Image from www.design-elements-blog.com

Home offices can get out of the lounge room and be amazing with their own space…

Image from www.knottinghillinteriors.com

And the perfect parents retreat is just a small reno away.

Or… make space for a teenagers haven.

So if you need another room…you may find you already have one, complete with fab angles, just waiting for you upstairs.

Walk right in

Image from www.desiretoinspire.com

Given that your walk in or closet is filled with clothes, shoes, handbags and jewellery that you bought because they were pretty….then there’s absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t be pretty!

Image from www.onbluepoolroad.com

If you have the space…a statement couch, ottoman or chair is a great addition to a dressing room.

Image from www.lilacand grey.com

And if you’re going to get the lighting right anywhere…this is the spot!

Image from www.psychedforstyle.com

Add some great colour to boost your sense of confidence as you select!

ps.  she must have loved that ottoman fabric…she’s got a jacket in the same…

Image from www.room-galleries.myhomeideas.com

Or use wallpaper to add character.

Image from www.habitaullychic.com

Artwork rarely makes an appearance in a walk in…but if you haven’t used up all the wall space with hooks for scarves, hats etc, then it’s lovely to bring art into a space filled with colour and patterns.

Image from www.desiretoinspire.com

If you don’t like having everything out and visible…then consider curtains to close the wardrobe off, rather than doors. It’s a much softer look.

Image from www.apartmenttherapy.com

But if you do…  How gorgeous is this?

Basket case!

Image from www.frolic-blog.com

This is the time of year when a lack of organization will bite you on the ass.  Getting a spare room habitable for guests, even just locating the chrissy decorations can be a cinch or a nightmare… depending on whether you did anything about it last year.

Cabinetry is costly and permanent, but baskets are an inexpensive storage solution that can adapt to your changing circumstances.  And they work in every room in the house…

Love this!

There are so many different types of baskets you’re bound to find a style for you.

Image from www.potterybarn.com

From coastal cute…

Image from www.remodelista.com

To rustic charm…

Image from www.ecochic.com

Keep in mind that stackable ones are space savers for when they’re not in use.

Image from www.thehaystackneedleonline.com

Low ones are great for orgainizing little items.  Ikea have half size as well as the original size woven baskets that fit two to a cube in their expedit bookcases.

Image from www.luxuryhousingtrends.com

You can even get stair baskets…an extraordinarily good idea for Mum’s in two storey houses.

Image from www.countrydays.wordpress.com

And these wire ones are gorgeous.

Organising with baskets is not expensive and it’s not hard.  While you’re finishing off present shopping grab a cool selection and set yourself up for a smooth and organised new year.

Pot luck

Image from www.inspiracoes-do-ser.blogspot.com

I really love pot rack hooks.  All through the nineties and naughties when they were as daggy as modular lounges and patterned lamp shades…still loved them.     I loathe bashing about in the bottom drawer…dragging out all the wrong ones first…having to sort them on a questionably clean floor…then chucking them all back in, while making yet another mental note to use the little griddle pan.  Like my clothes…if my pots and pans aren’t hanging up in my face, inspiring me to use them…then I wont.  Pot racks are clever.   They use the unusable space above, leaving you more below.  If you don’t want one because your pots are revolting…then your pots are revolting…get new ones.  A good pot will look even better the older and more worn it gets.

Some images to inspire…or convert…

If you’re really low on space they can make all the difference.

And you can get a bit creative with them too…  This old screen door is fab.

Stairway storage

Image from www.google.com

If you’re going to have stairs in your home it’s a good idea to utilise the space for storage.  A bit of clever thinking and a good stairmaker and you should be able to add loads of storage (and value) to your home.  Some stair storage solutions to inspire…..
