Bathrooms – Tiles

Have I mentioned how tired I am of plain white tiles?

Or worse… plain taupe, putty or any other boring boring boring tile???

Make a splash baby!! There are so many gorgeous patterned tiles out there.         And not only do they look a whole lot better, groovier, and more individual….       they’re a whole lot easier to live with!!

At the risk of repeating myself (!) don’t be scared things won’t “work” together.

Find a tile you love then work around it.  Depending on the tile… you can cover the floor with it, use it as a detail or contrast it with other patterns.

Whichever way you go… at least it won’t be a carbon copy of everybody else’s bathroom.  Down with taupe tiles!!!!!!

(Check out www.kasbahimports.com.au for beautiful hand painted fez tiles … utterly gorgeous!  )

Decorative tiles

Image from www.designsponge.com

For those contemplating a bathroom or kitchen update…have a think about decorative tiles.  White is handy…but boring.    Find tiles that you love…and make the space yours, not anyone’s.  Don’t be scared about “matching”…matching is probably the worst thing you could do for any room.  Instead surround yourself with pieces and designs that you love…and it will always look amazing.

And these!

If you’re too nervous to commit to a full pattern then consider sweet cameos.  Just a couple of hand painted tiles like the gorgeous Marie Antoinette tile above or the sweet floral ones below will add so much to an all white or all neutral wet area.

Colour me clean!

Your bath is the focal point for your bathroom…so make a splash with it!!

This beautiful old claw foot has been painted with a well chosen soft green.  I love how the choice of a duller palette has left this room elegant, relaxed and understated.  The combo of that amazing mirror and the claw foot could easily be overly formal with different colour choices.

LOVE pink in a bathroom.  Bathrooms are definitely female right?  …. just checked…”la salle de bain”…so yep… they’re girls!

Hot pink is even better…

This is stunning.  What beautiful detail …

I’m not entirely in love with this space…but wallpaper to contrast ( rather than match…) with a cool coloured tub is a great look.

You can be as pretty or as dramatic as you please.  Some more images to inspire…

This roll-top bath has been mounted on untreated oak blocks….cool huh?  Love the Le Corbusier chaise…

Professional restoration and painting of vintage baths can be fairly expensive…   So, if you’re feeling up to the challenge… check out The Daily Tubber (http://www.vintagetub.com/blog/2005/09/painting-exterior-of-old-claw-foot-tub.html ) and eHow Home (http://www.ehow.com/how_4882197_paint-claw-foot-bathtub.html ) Great  tips on prepping and painting your bath.

Internal glass doors

Image from www.apartmenttherapy.com

Whilst open plan homes are great…sometimes you need a few doors inside.

From a green perspective it’s a lot more practical to heat the one room you’re in rather than the whole house.

From an aesthetic perspective, doors, walls, angles (even the rooms) are elements that can play a decorative role.   And it’s nice to be able to have different feels per room and it’s nice to wonder what lies behind a door.    I like to have a little sense of privacy…or at least separateness in my home.

Image from www.home-industrial.blogspot.com

Glass doors are excellent for inside.  They provide the sense of separateness without being heavy or closed off.

Image from www.bellemaison23.com

This is such a clever idea for an entrance hall.  Stops the weather from coming in and separates the functional entry area from the living area without losing any of the great sense of space.  The glass also allows for some really clever colour play…breaking down the main colour of the living area and drawing attention up to the stained glass….fabulous.

Image from www.pinterest.com

And they can be just beautiful in their own right.  Some images to inspire….

If you’re finding your bathroom dead boring…then get yourself a quirky bathmat to inject a bit of fun.

Love this Moby mat from the talented Thomas Paul for $44.00.

Let there be light…

Image from www.pinterest.com

If you have a room with poor natural light…it’s almost impossible to make it look fresh and welcoming.

But…

a basic skylight costs under $500 so there’s absolutely no reason to have a dingy, unlit room.  Of course, there’s a million different types with a million different price tags…so do your research…always get three quotes, and think outside the square when designing.  Use your angles, consider the space and be inventive.

Lots of great skylight designs to inspire you….

So… if you’ve got a dark room that you rarely go into … or worse, a dimly lit room that you’re often in…make a call to a skylight manufacturer near you.  Better to get a quote and a few ideas, than to continue hating your room.
