Let there be light…

Image from www.pinterest.com

If you have a room with poor natural light…it’s almost impossible to make it look fresh and welcoming.

But…

a basic skylight costs under $500 so there’s absolutely no reason to have a dingy, unlit room.  Of course, there’s a million different types with a million different price tags…so do your research…always get three quotes, and think outside the square when designing.  Use your angles, consider the space and be inventive.

Lots of great skylight designs to inspire you….

So… if you’ve got a dark room that you rarely go into … or worse, a dimly lit room that you’re often in…make a call to a skylight manufacturer near you.  Better to get a quote and a few ideas, than to continue hating your room.

Basket case!

Image from www.frolic-blog.com

This is the time of year when a lack of organization will bite you on the ass.  Getting a spare room habitable for guests, even just locating the chrissy decorations can be a cinch or a nightmare… depending on whether you did anything about it last year.

Cabinetry is costly and permanent, but baskets are an inexpensive storage solution that can adapt to your changing circumstances.  And they work in every room in the house…

Love this!

There are so many different types of baskets you’re bound to find a style for you.

From coastal cute…

To rustic charm…

Image from www.ecochic.com

Keep in mind that stackable ones are space savers for when they’re not in use.

Image from www.thehaystackneedleonline.com

Low ones are great for orgainizing little items.  Ikea have half size as well as the original size woven baskets that fit two to a cube in their expedit bookcases.

Image from www.luxuryhousingtrends.com

You can even get stair baskets…an extraordinarily good idea for Mum’s in two storey houses.

Image from www.countrydays.wordpress.com

And these wire ones are gorgeous.

Organising with baskets is not expensive and it’s not hard.  While you’re finishing off present shopping grab a cool selection and set yourself up for a smooth and organised new year.

Orange ade

Image from www.arhdecoration.com

If you haven’t already noticed orange is the IT colour this season.  So vibrant and fun…a perfect change from the dullness of winter.  And it goes with just about everything!

Image from www.designsponge.com

If you don’t want to invest too much money in your orange lift, then stick to accents.  Towels in bathrooms, vases, prints, cushions or lamp shades in lounge rooms, and throws or pillow cases in bedrooms are great accent pieces.

Image from www.pinterest.com

But if you are prepared to invest…what a fab rug!  Armadillo now has a designer range available with all manner of cool colours and designs available including orange and a similar Moroccan style pattern.  These are also available through www.iwanthomewares.com.au with freight included.  Email me at ria@iwantiwantiwant.com.au if interested.

Check out Matt Blatt for some very cool orange stools and chairs.  Freedom also has an orange metal stencil side table that’s cute and inexpensive.

Bed Bath and Gorgeous

Image from www.google.com

I really really love a bath in a bedroom ( and particularly this bedroom…v.gorgeous).  I don’t want a vanity, or a shower…I certainly don’t want a toilet.  But a bath….ahhh.

No general bathroom mess to stare at …just your best bath oils and towels and a euphoric float across the room from bath to bed.

Image from www.flickr.com

Image from www.thevghuis.blogspot.com

Generally you need quite a big room for this to work, but some tricks will help it work with less space.  The problem with free-standing baths in a small area is getting around the back to clean it.  Position the bath in front of French doors for example and the bath can be hard up against the wall, with good access to clean.

Image from www.pinterest.com

Love the colours here…and that you have art and nature to gaze at while you soak .

Image from www.robmills.com.au

This is definitely a bath/bedroom designed for a man.  Not only is it far from girly…only a very tall woman would get any sort of view out of that cut out so you’re back staring at your toes.

Image from www.google.co.uk

Chandeliers and claw foot baths…v. good friends.

Image from www.mytasteisdistasteful.tumblr.com

This is by far my favourite.  Stunning space, amazing fireplace and gorgeous bed.  Love them all.  The only downside to this look, (as always with the industrial style) is that it lacks warmth, even with that fire blazing.  Plaster the section of wall behind the bed (not the fireplace or window wall), put a gloriously soft and textured rug, and long linen curtains draping the floor slightly… and that’s a bedroom!

Pretty in pink

Image from www.downandoutchic.blogspot.com

Deep down…every girl likes pink.  Maybe not full on like the bedroom above … (gorgeous btw)…but pink, like any other colour has about a hundred different personalities.  It all depends on what shade you use and how much of it you use…

Image from www.housetohome.co.uk

Great combo with the classic checker board floor.  The black and white gives depth to the palette, so the end result is more elegant than girly.

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

There’s nothing at all girly about this look.

`

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

Or this…  Love everything about this room except for the wierd oversized glass things in the right foreground.

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

A hot pink bath mat suggests a woman is in control of the bathroom…never a bad thing.

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

This is the coolest bedroom I ‘ve seen for ages.

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

The pink couch makes this very neutral zone fresh, contemporary and inviting.  Love that they’ve echoed the couch colour outside by painting the shed pink.

Image from www.theshootfactory.co.uk

And, of course, if you want a totally girly room, then pink’s your man.  I would have loved this dressing room as a girl… now too actually.

Amour armoires!

Image from www.google.com

Armoire is just French for wardrobe.  So I suppose French wardrobes (generally a lot more ornate, like the one above and below) are  more genuinely armoires…but really any freestanding cupboard makes the grade.

Image form www.simplypix.tumblr.com

A bit of colour on the more ornate ones can look gorgeous.

Image from www.thedailytelecraft.com

Image from www.etsy.com

How cute is this one?

Image from www.houzz.com

This one has no curved top and far less ornate detailing, but it’s still a gorgeous armoire.

Image from www.restorationhardware.com

And this design is totally restrained…if not a little spartan…but so beautiful!

Image from www.bhg.com

Plain and a bit banged up…but this old wardrobe is full of character and is still, you guessed it…. an arm wah darling.
