Today’s post is really just an ode to the most important things in your house…..
Windows make or break a house so don’t stint on them. If you can’t afford new ones, check out second hand auction houses for amazing old windows that just need some love and elbow grease.

It’s the most beautiful day today…a day where you’re glad you put a bit of time into your garden. If you don’t have a garden…don’t do without spring and summer prettiness (and even some autumn and winter if you’re a better gardener than I am)…get some window boxes going.
And if your windows are small…or un-renovated…then all the more reason to get some beauty around them!
A host of gorgeous images for you to imagine at your window sill…

Ps. Sorry again for not posting regularly last week…still having trouble adjusting to the new mac!
Also….if anyone out there has anything they’d like for me to focus on…feel free to leave a comment with a request!
And I’d really like to hear what you think about the photo references coming grouped at the end rather than after each photo.
I think I love no text interrupting the flow of the images…
Cheers,

I love plantation shutters…but the full shutters are my favourite. With the right paint job they look so amazing and on a practical level…these things work!
Image from www.123rf.com
Particularly if you have them on the outside. It makes much more sense to stop the actual glass of the window from heating up or cooling down by covering them externally. Also, if you have them outside it means you can have curtains inside…
But, inside or outside…they look gorgeous! Some images to inspire. x

If you have a room with poor natural light…it’s almost impossible to make it look fresh and welcoming.
But…
a basic skylight costs under $500 so there’s absolutely no reason to have a dingy, unlit room. Of course, there’s a million different types with a million different price tags…so do your research…always get three quotes, and think outside the square when designing. Use your angles, consider the space and be inventive.
Lots of great skylight designs to inspire you….

So… if you’ve got a dark room that you rarely go into … or worse, a dimly lit room that you’re often in…make a call to a skylight manufacturer near you. Better to get a quote and a few ideas, than to continue hating your room.

If you’re lucky enough to have room in your roof…you should use it! Good windows and blinds are key to making a small attic space work…and these ones above are fantastic for air circulation. Also loving the touch of wallpaper above the bed!
Image from www.google.com
Of course your usable space is limited with the angles of the roof…but it’s the angles that make the rooms look so gorgeous!
Image from www.conspicuousstyle.com
So many uses for an attic space…. Love the idea of a dressing room up there…might have to have the high heels downstairs though.

Home offices can get out of the lounge room and be amazing with their own space…

And the perfect parents retreat is just a small reno away.

Or… make space for a teenagers haven.
So if you need another room…you may find you already have one, complete with fab angles, just waiting for you upstairs.

Stripes are so versatile. Mix different widths and colours and you have a relaxed loose look.

Striped wallpaper can be very dramatic. I love the black and white look above…and the medium width vertical stripes give real visual height to the room.
Image from www.housetohome.co.uk
Wider stripes in neutral tones teamed with a sophisticated pinstripe in the same palette and the look is elegant.
Image from www.source4interiors.com
Or…go for some bright, primary colours and the look is all fun.

Love the turquoise floral against the candy stripes!

Here the striking grey, white and black stripes go from horizontal to vertical and are a fabulous backdrop to this quirky ensemble.

Incorporating stripes into your architecture can have huge impact. These reclaimed boards in their original colours are beautiful.

And a bright stripy floor is fantastic in a childs room…

Upholstering a statment piece of furniture in stripes really adds to its impact. This ottoman is very cool,

And this chair is gorgeous.

Finally…striped curtains give you a really good base to add patterns and colours to your room, and draw attention immediately to your windows.

Eyelet curtains are a great alternative to the old fashioned pleated curtains. Instead of having bunches of heavy fabric at the top of the window, you have clean lines and a contemporary look.
Image from www.potterybarn.com
And unlike tab tops you don’t have a strip of light coming through between the rod and the top of the curtain.
Image from www.potterybarn.comT
They work with block-out fabric and sheers.
Image from www.potterybarn.com
And most styles…
Image from www.potterybarn.com
Pottery Barn have loads of eyelets at reasonable prices – and some good images for inspiration…
As does West Elm…

The other thing I love about eyelets is you get to have some pretty cool visible hardware.

Ugly curtains have a huge impact on a room. So take down your manky old ones and update your home. It doesn’t have to be all at once, room by room it’s quite affordable. For inexpensive options here in Australia, check out Freedom and Spotlight. A lot of them can be a bit scary, but they do have some nice ones. Spotlight even have eyelets sold on the roll…but beware… they don’t protect the fabric from the hardware so you can get some dodgy sections in your meterage. The Halley in charcoal from Freedom is a nice one with full block out. Or…if you want to get them custom made with your choice of gorgeous fabric….then get in touch with me!
