Andrew Martin

It’s just a fact that the best designers are in the UK.  Must be the cold weather…  or the lack of daylight.  Whatever it is, if ever I find a fabric or design that grabs me…you can lay money on the designer being British.

Which brings me to one of my biggest crushes….Andrew Martin.

I love the nostalgia element that runs through his work.  And that Brit pop coolness.  He’s not cheap..but he’s vibrant and unique.  Some more images to inspire…

Not that I don’t like The Beatles music..but I’ve never bought one of their albums.  Their album designs…  different story…

The new I want THAT! statement pieces range from I want I want I want! will have a number of stunning upholstered pieces featuring Andrew Martin’s designs.    Can’t wait!

If you want to tease yourself and have  a look at his furniture and other designs go to www.andrewmartin.co.uk

Oh Suzani!

A Suzani is an embroidered tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries.

Traditionally they were embroidered by Central Asian brides to present to their husbands on their wedding day.

So, basically a dowry…but a whole lot more beautiful than stinking camels with bad attitudes.  I wonder what he got her…

Suzani is a Persian word for needle, and the art of making textiles like this is called Suzankari as silk or cotton thread is hand embroidered onto a cotton base in a variety of stitch styles.

Often you’ll find they’re made in two or more pieces and then sewn together.

I love them!  I love how they bring a good punch of colours, textures and patterns into a room with just one piece..  You see a lot of  sun and moon motifs , tulips, carnations and irises, leaves and vines, fruits…gorgeous stuff!

Beware over usage though!  With something as strong as a Suzani there is such a thing as too much.  But used well…. Stunning!

Suzanis really lend themselves to upholstery too…

How fantastic does this one look as a bedhead…. stunning…

Check out http://www.uzbek-craft.com/ for online suzanis…but also keep an eye out on Ebay.

Colour me clean!

Your bath is the focal point for your bathroom…so make a splash with it!!

This beautiful old claw foot has been painted with a well chosen soft green.  I love how the choice of a duller palette has left this room elegant, relaxed and understated.  The combo of that amazing mirror and the claw foot could easily be overly formal with different colour choices.

LOVE pink in a bathroom.  Bathrooms are definitely female right?  …. just checked…”la salle de bain”…so yep… they’re girls!

Hot pink is even better…

This is stunning.  What beautiful detail …

I’m not entirely in love with this space…but wallpaper to contrast ( rather than match…) with a cool coloured tub is a great look.

You can be as pretty or as dramatic as you please.  Some more images to inspire…

This roll-top bath has been mounted on untreated oak blocks….cool huh?  Love the Le Corbusier chaise…

Professional restoration and painting of vintage baths can be fairly expensive…   So, if you’re feeling up to the challenge… check out The Daily Tubber (http://www.vintagetub.com/blog/2005/09/painting-exterior-of-old-claw-foot-tub.html ) and eHow Home (http://www.ehow.com/how_4882197_paint-claw-foot-bathtub.html ) Great  tips on prepping and painting your bath.

Window wanderers

It’s the most beautiful day today…a day where you’re glad you put a bit of time into your garden.  If you don’t have a garden…don’t do without spring and summer prettiness (and even some autumn and winter if you’re a better gardener than I am)…get some window boxes going.

And if your windows are small…or un-renovated…then all the more reason to get some beauty around them!

A host of gorgeous images for you to imagine at your window sill…

Ps.  Sorry again for not posting regularly last week…still having trouble adjusting to the new mac!

Also….if anyone out there has anything they’d like for me to focus on…feel free to leave a comment with a request!

And I’d really like to hear what you think about the photo references coming grouped at the end rather than after each photo.

I think I love no text interrupting the flow of the images…

Cheers,

Hello yellow!

Image from www.allposters.com

Loving how much yellow we’re seeing lately…it’s a very cool colour when used well.

Image from www.design-crisis.com

Yellow is a fantastic colour for a couch…it really lends itself to quirky and retro designs.

Image from www.emmawho.tumblr.com

Having said that…it doesn’t lend itself to an average design at all.  So, if you think you might inject some bright yellow into your world with a cheapo sofa…the yellow will only make it look cheaper and nastier.

Image from www.spicyoldstuff.blogspot.com

When playing with yellow in couches…as with most big colours…be prepared to spend to make it look great.

Image from www.sweethomestyle.tumblr.com

Image from www.anthropologie.com

The same rule applies to armchairs…

Image from www.apartmenttherapy.com

Image from www.avotakka.fi.com

Where you can play cheaply with yellow is with cool little wooden chairs like this, or stools or benches.

More expensive than a wooden chair…but still less than a couch are the industrial metal chairs that look amazing in yellow.

And of course, vintage posters in yellow are fab.

Table matters

Image from www.missdaisybuchanan.tumblr.com

I’m so over the set of plain white table ware on everyone’s table!  It’s time to bring some character and flair back to your dining experience.   So… as the old Maxwell and William’s chip and go to plate and bowl heaven I’m replacing them one by one with sweet finds from op shops, garage sales and second hand stores.

Image from www.homelife.com.au

A good mix of table ware not only makes a dinner party a whole lot cooler…it makes small events nicer.  A la Nigella…if I’m making myself the perfect snack…then I want it on the perfect dish.

Image from www.madamebonbon.com.au

It’s like finally ditching the safe black handbag from your wardrobe….once you’ve brought in some beautiful plates and bowls, you can go from strength to strength with a cool mix of table cloths, place mats, vases…etc etc.

And afternoon teas will have a graciousness that’s long been missing…

image from www.vintagetableware.co.uk

Vintage tableware is so in right now that top end wedding planners are making it a big feature of their packages… and rightly so…how great does the grooms setting look?

Image from www.weheartit.com

And this Mad Hatters Tea Party is fantastic!  I’m so doing this!

Some great images of beautiful, beautiful vintage crockery to get you on the hunt this weekend…
