Basket case!

Image from www.frolic-blog.com

This is the time of year when a lack of organization will bite you on the ass.  Getting a spare room habitable for guests, even just locating the chrissy decorations can be a cinch or a nightmare… depending on whether you did anything about it last year.

Cabinetry is costly and permanent, but baskets are an inexpensive storage solution that can adapt to your changing circumstances.  And they work in every room in the house…

Love this!

There are so many different types of baskets you’re bound to find a style for you.

Image from www.potterybarn.com

From coastal cute…

Image from www.remodelista.com

To rustic charm…

Image from www.ecochic.com

Keep in mind that stackable ones are space savers for when they’re not in use.

Image from www.thehaystackneedleonline.com

Low ones are great for orgainizing little items.  Ikea have half size as well as the original size woven baskets that fit two to a cube in their expedit bookcases.

Image from www.luxuryhousingtrends.com

You can even get stair baskets…an extraordinarily good idea for Mum’s in two storey houses.

Image from www.countrydays.wordpress.com

And these wire ones are gorgeous.

Organising with baskets is not expensive and it’s not hard.  While you’re finishing off present shopping grab a cool selection and set yourself up for a smooth and organised new year.

Orange ade

Image from www.arhdecoration.com

If you haven’t already noticed orange is the IT colour this season.  So vibrant and fun…a perfect change from the dullness of winter.  And it goes with just about everything!

Image from www.designsponge.com

If you don’t want to invest too much money in your orange lift, then stick to accents.  Towels in bathrooms, vases, prints, cushions or lamp shades in lounge rooms, and throws or pillow cases in bedrooms are great accent pieces.

Image from www.pinterest.com

But if you are prepared to invest…what a fab rug!  Armadillo now has a designer range available with all manner of cool colours and designs available including orange and a similar Moroccan style pattern.  These are also available through www.iwanthomewares.com.au with freight included.  Email me at ria@iwantiwantiwant.com.au if interested.

Some more images to inspire…

Artwork is always a great way to introduce orange…

Love love love the orange fridge!

Check out Matt Blatt for some very cool orange stools and chairs.  Freedom also has an orange metal stencil side table that’s cute and inexpensive.

Or go to www.iwanthomewares.com.au for this fab fabric in a custom made lamp shade.

And Etsy always has groovy retro pieces…and retro always has orange!

Primary school

Image from www.stylemepretty.com

Spring is here, and the world has some colour again.  So I thought I'd do a series of posts on primary colours and how well they can work in your home.

Yellow is as good and fresh a place to start as any……

Image from www.interior-styles.blogspot.com

A bright yellow wall is a bold move and can look amazing…but just make sure your furniture and accessories are just as bold and groovy.   An antler pendant and a great cow hide will certainly do the trick.

Image from www.countryliving.com

A softer yellow is a great backdrop for a fresh country look.

Image from www.housetohome.co.uk

And you'd be surprised what colours can look really sweet with it.  This pink ginham and floral chair is gorgeous and makes the yellow…well, mellow I suppose.

Image from www.kellyraeroberts.com

While a bright mix of accossories against yellow is just fun.

Image from www.none.com

And of course, soft yellow has been popular for nurseries for a long time.

Image from www.urbanoutfitteres.com

My favorite use of yellow is as an accent.  It provides a fab pop of colour, adding a touch of the humour to a dull palette base.

Image from www.mixandchic.com

I'm a little disturbed by the overwhelming dog theme here…but the yellow bedside with the predominantly grey and taupe palette is ace.

Image from www.madebygirl.blogspot.com

And how great is this chair!!!!!  (Also…check out the gorgeous swimmer print in the background…)

Image from www.google.com

And this is about the sweetest little afternoon tea setting I've seen.

Image from www.flickr.com

It doesn't have to be a dull colour scheme for yellow accents to work brilliantly…

Image from www.kellyraeobetrts.com

Hopefully, if yellow is your thing…this has given you some confidence and/or inspiration to include it in your home.

p.s.  Someone with a yellow aura is typically very clever…. not sure if that applies to someone with a yellow wall, but it can't hurt.

Home Beautiful – November issue

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

Keep an eye out for this month’s Home Beautiful…I want I want I want! has three features in it.

  Before……….

This wee room (page 220) went from being really drab and unwelcoming to a gorgeous retreat for guests.

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

My favorite bits….

Shutter doors! I love shutter doors, and as the existing cupboard doors were the only redeeming feature in the room… I decided to capitalise on it and reclaim two more as a bedhead. Looks amazing!

The decorative ladder. This is a great piece for any room really. Adds great visual interest above eye level and gives guests a cool way to hang their towels etc. Sadly, since doing this makeover, Carina Sherlock, my suppliers for the ladders have gone out of business. I’m searching for a good replacement…but in the interim, Provincial Home Living have a range . They are a lot smaller and have more of a vintage feel to them…but they’re very sweet.

The vintage dragon fly hooks. So so cute, and way practical.

The vintage mirror. If you have a small room…mirrors are your solution. This gorgeous (huge!) mirror virtually doubles the sense of space in the room…and looks incredible doing it.  No photo of it here…my skills aren’t up to scratch…check the feature and the online shop. www.iwanthomewares.com.au

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

Total cost for the makeover came to $1939, plus $300 for the styling consultation and followup.

Nursery makeover. (Page 230)

Before….

After….

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

A new baby meant big changes for this room. From dark and cluttered to bright, light and organised.

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

Favourite bits….

Vintage wicker cot. So much nicer than big planks of wood. I’d much rather be looking at dappled light as I lay in my bed than bars!

Handmade hot air balloons. Love love love them. They bring a real sense of fun into the room.

Dado wall panelling. Panelling gives square characterless boxes character and interest.

Image from www.iwantiwantiwant.com.au

Total cost for the makeover came to $1129, plus $300 for the styling consultation and followup.

Makeover your spare room feature. (Pg 193)

Great tips from both myself and editor Jane Parbury for getting the most out of your spare room.  Check it out and let me know what you think!

Bless…

Image from www.notonthehighstreet.com

Granny blankets have got their groove back.  No longer daggy…these warm reminders of another era hold their own against the mass produced blankets and throws our stores are flooded with.

Image from www.johanna-vintage.blogspot.com

You don’t have to have vivid primary colours… granny blankets look utterly gorgeous in a muted palette as well.

Image from www.dreamsmaylinger.tumblr.com

Really, they lend themselves to any colour scheme you could want.

Image from www.pickles.no.com

And given what they’re made of and how they are made…they’re extra soft and extra lightweight.

Image from www.justbesplendid.tumblr.com

Love love love the green, yellow and pink.

Image from www.notonthehighstreet.com

If your nan isn’t forthcoming with your custom made blanket then check out www.etsy.com or go to Not on the High Street for these cool red and white ones.

Rock on

Image from www.snippetandink.com

There’s a romantic timelessness to rocking chairs.  As soon as I get my perfect porch I’ll be rocking away.

Image from www.southernaccents.com

Image from www.tinywhitedaisies.tumblr.com

There are loads of old wooden rocking chairs out there on Ebay and  www.gumtree.com.au

Image from www.apartmenttherapy.com

Just give them a quick sand and a lick of paint.

Image from www.amyseiffert.com

Painting up an old rocker can give it a whole new lease on life, particularly with a vibrant primary colour.  And with a can of spray paint, it doesn’t take too long.

Image from www.annixon.blogspot.com

Rockers are also fab for making wee nooks functional and welcoming.

Image from www.swedishinteriordesign.blogspot.com

And painted white they are the perfect chair for a nursery.  Simply add brighter cushions as they grow.

Image from www.etsy.com

Danish style rockers work easily in a contemporary space and take up less room than traditional ones.

Image from www.miniobsessed.blogspot.com

And the Eames style rockers are very contemporary, and with the moulded chair…pretty comfy!

Check out www.sokol.com.au and www.mattblatt.com.aun for replicas.

Image from www.readymade.com

And then there are the quirky ones…hard to find, but very cool.
