Idiosyncratic accessories that reflect your interests, or your sense of humour, are a key ingredient in your home.  It’s your home, not a magazines, or your girlfriends…yours.  So it should have pieces you choose specifically because you love them…regardless.

Isn’t that why we get our own home?  So we can drink out the of juice carton if we want, or hang baby blue boxing gloves at the end of our beautiful iron beds.

It doesn’t have to be a Bengal tiger lamp…(but loving it!).

Or antique panels from a farm listing name and weight of cows …(and  loving it even more!)

It can be confidently ( or even semi permanently) incorporating a hobby or past-time into your living space.  Again…it’s your space…not your visitors.  Why do we cater so much to people who don’t pay the mortgage?  Don’t get me started on rarely used guest rooms…

Or it can be as simple as a lovely old vintage phone.

Or a fancy mirror pimped up to another level with a can of spray paint.

As authentic as much loved and still used cricket bats.

Or as nostalgic as the guitar that doesn’t get played too often…but is still loved.

If you don’t know where to start to add a piece of interest, then just sort through your childhood pieces.  Fun mementos of childhood like these skittles look great.

It’s easy enough to copy the pages of a magazine and your space will be beautiful.  But it is only when you add yourself that your house becomes a home and somewhere people want to hang out.

Check out … as ever … your local antique stores for pieces that take your fancy, and Anthopologie has some cool quirky pieces like this papier mache zebra.

But start in your Mum’s garage…. you’ll be amazed at what you find and how cool they can look in a different setting.
